AI SEO effectiveness – It’s the thought behind the prompt

A few things we know – and a bit of logic. 

  1. You can take a degree in “Prompt Engineering” – but most AI users don’t.
  2. Every SEO project now uses AI across nearly the entire SEO process –  but many use it naively.
  3. Future SEO differentiation and success will be determined by the effectiveness with which you use AI in the SEO process, and
  4. That effectiveness is substantially encapsulated in the “prompts” you use.

Do original prompts result in original responses? Yes, when they provide details that others did not.

Not All Prompts are Equal

Since Open AI released ChatGPT 3, we’ve been incorporating AI into both the SEO Primer and our Advanced SEO programmes. As ChatGPT evolved and evolves, we’ve extended its use across increasingly more of the SEO process, and now, in the Advanced SEO Programme in particular, we live demonstrate the latest prompts and the  engineering methodologies we used to build them.

You might be thinking “If SEO is a science, which it is, aren’t all the AI prompts you’ll need for SEO more or less the same?”. The answer is “less” – a lot “less”! Tools like Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity only give you what you ask for – exactly what you ask for – not more and not less. There is so much more that you can ask for that will very significantly improve your SEO execution when you know how to ask for it. I’ll show you that on the next Advanced SEO Programme.

AI Reasoning

The latest releases of these new LLM tools support a thing called “Reasoning”. That means that these tools can work through facts and conditions and reach inferred outcomes. When reasoning matures a little more,  that’s going to make SEO even more interesting. Most of us potential “end users” of reasoning haven’t fully figured out yet how exactly we’re going to apply it in SEO, but watch this space for some really new and innovative ways to apply AI reasoning in SEO. 

Agentic AI  

The next step after reasoning is “agentic SEO” – autonomous agents that can take actions. (likely to be ’25 and ’26). These agents ultimately will be able to directly update websites, send emails, improve value propositions based on conversion metrics and so much more.

So AI in SEO is here to stay and will become increasingly more powerful. That makes you the “Choreographer” and your AI Toolkit is your team. By the way, there’ll always be a need for the Choreographer too!
